冷軋輥在工作過程中要承受很大的軋制應力，加上軋件的焊縫、夾雜、邊裂等問題，容易導致瞬間高溫，使工作輥受到強烈熱沖擊，造成裂紋、粘輥、剝落甚至報廢。直徑超過400mm的冷軋軋輥，在鍛造后，多半在中心饅一個670一250mm的通7L。因此，冷軋輥要有抵抗因彎曲應力、扭轉應力、剪切應力引起的開裂和剝落的能力，同時也要有高的耐磨性。
