軸轂聯接的方式有鍵聯接、花鍵聯接、成形聯接、脹套聯接、銷聯接、緊定螺釘聯接、過盈聯接等，有些聯接方式僅用于軸轂聯接，有些聯接方式可兼作其它聯接。鍵和花鍵是常見的軸轂聯接方式。

一個切向鍵只能傳遞一個方向的轉矩，傳遞雙向轉矩時，須用互成120°～130°角的兩個鍵。用于載荷很大，對中要求不嚴的場合。由于鍵槽對軸削弱較大 ，常用于直徑大于100mm的軸上。

與平鍵聯接比較，花鍵聯接在強度、工藝和使用方面有下列特點：在軸上與轂孔上直接而均勻地制出較多的齒與槽，故聯接受力較為均勻；因槽較淺，齒根處應力集中較小，軸與轂的強度削弱較少。
