拉鋼式冷床，其特點是利用單爪繩式或鏈式拉鋼機，橫向成批拖運軋件。這種拉鋼機往往配備有潛行裝置，以達到有選擇性地拖運某一根（束）軋件的目的。潛行裝置有兩種形式：一種是杠桿式，另一種是滑塊式。

由冷床入口輥道及升降擋板、橫移小車、分鋼裝置、步進齒條冷床、編成組的圓鋼，通過橫移小車移送到冷床分鋼裝置，動齒條每步進一個周期，分鋼裝置就撥一根鋼到靜齒條上，使成組的圓鋼逐根分配到每一個齒內，由于上冷床的圓鋼溫度很高。
